YMCA is an organisation that supports young people by offering recreational activities in designated spaces such as gyms, dance studios, theatres, dojos, and recording studios. Authentic Attribute was tasked to design the reception area of YMCA Swansea. Originally displaying magnolia walls with worn-down furniture, the room required a face-lift. The questionnaire collected from the staff highlighted the high footfall and diversity of the place. Simplicity, neutral colours, and comfortable furniture created a space that is suitable for everyone.
The final design features bright white walls that bounce off sunshine from the Grade II listed building’s arched windows. Charcoal wall panels add depth and hide imperfections as a result of scratches unavoidable by the high-traffic area. Corridors are kept wheelchair friendly by eliminating obstruction and providing low-level furniture. Simplicity in the form of colour choice and layout presents a clean space. Multicolour glass stickers and LCD displays remind the users that the hub welcomes youths and supports diversity.
